Good April conditions
15th April 2016
Many resorts are shutting for the season but some are open into May in the Alps. See here for current condtions, which resorts are still open and when they close. UPDATED
It can be a confusing time of year – some people think skiing and snowboarding is over while others, including us here at PlanetSKI, know there are still turns to be made – if you know where to look.
Our reporter, Roger Ainger, is in Livigno in Italy.
“Powder day today,” Roger said on Tuesday and he will be reporting for us shortly on the end of season in the resort.
This is what it currently looks like.
While the images below come from Val Thorens in France.
We have recently been in Val Thorens in France; it shuts on May 8th – see here for what is on offer.
We have just returned from Canada where the resort of Sunshine Village in Alberta shuts on May 23rd – see here for our latest picture gallery.
On Thursday we publish our weekly snow report that comes from Fraser Wilkin at weathertoski.co.uk
“Snow conditions are also excellent for the time of year – you can even still find some powder on high north-facing slopes if you know where to look or have a good guide. Elsewhere, a good overnight refreeze means that the going is nice and firm early on,” posted Fraser on Wednesday.
“After another relatively fine day tomorrow, the weather will turn more unsettled again from the north-west on Friday, and over the weekend, with further snowfall for some of the higher resorts. It will also turn colder, especially early next week,” Fraser added.
Do check back tomorrow for the latest update with all the details of current conditions.
There was snow at the weekend in the Alps below 1,000m as the temperature dropped.
One resort that could barely open in December due to a lack of snow, Morzine, closed at the weekend with snow falling.
It was the same in neighbouring Les Gets in the Portes du Soleil.
And in Champery.
And on Monday it was snowing down to 900m, in La Clussaz, France, where La Balme sector in the resort is open to May 1st.
And here is what it looked like last weekend in two resorts with high altitude skiing:
“I’ve just returned from a week in the Paradiski ski area where there were excellent Spring skiing conditions in both Les Arcs and La Plagne. The best skiing was above 2,000m so we were lucky that there are plenty of choices of runs at this altitude in both resorts. We were even treated to a powder day in Les Arcs on 14th April after 20cm of snow fell during the night,” said PlanetSKI reader, Krystelle Kubicki, from Iglu Ski.
“Skiing at the end of the season is brilliant for so many reasons: quiet slopes, longer lift openings, cheaper holiday prices, après in the sunshine and fun slushy snow in the afternoon. As long as you go to a high altitude ski resort with a reliable snowfall there is no reason why an end of season trip can’t be the best – it was mine!” added Krystelle.
And there was skiing in Scotland at the weekend as fresh snow fell.
So, where are the best resorts in the Alps for a spot of late season skiing and snowboarding and when do the resorts close?
