The father of the British snowboarder who took her own life on her 18th birthday has set up a foundation to raise funds for young winter athletes.
Ellie Soutter, a rising star in snowboard cross and freeride, was found dead in woods near her home in Les Gets, France last Wednesday, 25th July.
Messages of condolence and support came in from across the snowsports world.
The funeral will take place in Les Gets on Thursday.
Tony Soutter has said it will be a celebration of his daughter’s life.
He has asked that there be no flowers and that anyone who wishes to contribute should donate to the new foundation.
He announced the decision to set up the Ellie Soutter Foundation on Facebook.
“Since the Tragic death of My beautiful daughter Ellie Soutter we have decided to set up in her memory, The Ellie Soutter Foundation.
“This is a fundraiser for young winter athletes like Ellie, to help enable them to acheive there potential and dreams.”
A GoFundMe page he set up in 2015 to help support Ellie Soutter with her training and competitions has now become a fundraiser for the Ellie Soutter Foundation.
The money raised will go to young winter athletes who need financial help.
“As a junior athlete coming from a family without substantial wealth, Ellie often had to miss out on competing and training through lack of funds,” her family says on their GoFundMe page.
“She felt and understood the constant pressure to obtain the necessary funds for her training and events.
“A full season of required training to maintain this level of competition was in excess of £30,000 annually.
“At this time, as a Junior GB athlete, there is minimal or no funding for travel or accommodation and athletes have to pay a subscription for coaching.
“We have decided to form The Ellie Soutter Foundation in her memory to help and assist other young winter athletes in similar circumstances.”
Tony Soutter said he wanted to thank everyone “for the overwhelming messages of condolence and prayers.”
Ellie Soutter was one of GB’s best up-and-coming snowboarders and was tipped for a place at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
She won a bronze medal in snowboard cross at the 2017 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in Erzurum, Turkey.
It was Team GB’s only medal of the event and she carried the flag at the closing ceremony of the Games.
She also made the podium on the Freeride Junior World Tour last season.
She was the only female snowboarder and came second, competing alongside the boys.
You can contribute to the Ellie Soutter Foundation on the GoFundMe page.
