Before we look at the snow in the Alps lets not forget the Pyrenees.
It has seen some snow too:

And so to the Alps…
The glacier resort of Stubai in the Tirol in Austria has announced it is opening this Friday, September 13th, after 55cm of fresh snow.
Lucky for some.
This is what it currently looks like.

There is even snow down in the valley – 10cm to be precise.
And it seems to have caught some animals by surprise:

Snow often falls at this time of year but it is earlier than the past few years.
It is set to warm up and there is not much in the forecast.
“Currently, in the Alps (Isere and Savoie in particular), the measurements give between 5cm and 10cm of snow, on average, above 1,600m,” said a statement from Meteo France.

“This is not exceptional for a month of September. In the next 15 days, by the end of September, the weather will not favour any new snowfall.”

All the more reason then to enjoy what has fallen.
Stubai is one of the most popular early season resorts in the Alps.
See here as we skied in the resort in October a few years back:
And we were skiing powder in Stubai in the middle of May this year:
It is one of our favourite glacier ski areas in the Alps.
Hintertux in the Tirol is currently open and here at PlanetSKI we understand Pitztal and Kaunertal will open some of their slopes at the end of September.
Meawhile there is snow in the resort of Nordkette above Innsbruck in the Tirol.
One of our great friends, the ski writer Matt Clark, has just sent us this video:

And here is what it looks like in Livigno in Italy:

Other images from Italy of the snow come from the glacier ski area of Passo Stelvio.
It is open for skiing and snowboarding, along with the glacier at Hintertux in Austria and the glacier above Zermatt in Switzerland that is also accessed from Cervinia.
Passo Stelvio has just had 40cm of fresh snow.

Norway is open for snowsports again after the Galdhopiggen summer ski center re-opened after it also had 40cm of fresh snow.
It is normally open for skiing from spring to late autumn, but had to close to close in July due to high temperatures affecting the snowpack.
But it has now been able to re-open after the recent colder weather and fresh snow.

The Galdhøpiggen summer ski centre is a glacial ski resort which lies in Juvbreen at the foot of Galdhøpiggen in Oppland.
The resort has a single T-bar lift, with capacity of 1,200 persons per hour.
There is one slope which is 1,400m long with a 350m vertical descent.
It is the highest ski centre in Scandinavia.
In the Alps snow was falling across some of the peaks at the weekend.
Here’s a video from Val Thorens n Les3Vallees in France.

It’s been coming down in Champoluc in the Aosta Valley too:
And what about over in the glacier resorts in the Tirol in Austria?

The temperatures have dropped in the Alps and snow has been falling at altitude.

More snow is forecast over the weekend.

And it’s not just Stubai that has seen the snow.

There’s been a dusting at Hintertux in the Tirol and there is plenty more in the weekend forecast.

And while we are on the subject of snow and resorts opening, Colorado in the USA is gearing up.

Arapahoe Basin brought out its first cannons on Thursday and is preparing them.
The resort plans to open in mid-October.
‘The Sundance is standing. After a little but of wiring, it will be ready to go by the weekend,” said the resort’s chief operating office Alan Henceroth.
