To keep people cool.
The machines are going to spray the Olympic areas as they endure high temperatures and stifling humidity.

The Games will take place from 24th July to 9th August 2020.

The temperature reaches 35 to 40 degrees in July-August.

It will be more like a thin spray of ice/cold water than artificial snow and it may be sprayed on the spectator seats and the ground in places during the Games.

This is expected to reduce the temperature by 5 to 10 degrees.

Up to ten tons of ‘snow’ can be made in a day.

“We haven’t decided definitively that we will use this system next year for the Olympics, but we want to test it to see how effective it is,” a Tokyo 2020 spokeswoman told the newsagency, AFP.

A snow-making machine will be tried out at a test canoeing event in Tokyo on September 13th.

At a beach volleyball test event in July vapour sprays, shaded and air-conditioned rest areas and distribution of water and ice packs were tried.

This summer 57 fatalities in Japan have been attributed to the heat.

The Games were last held in Japan in 1964 Olympics were held in Japan.
They were held in October.
However an October date does not fit in with the world sporting calendar and it is thought would not be so popular to a global TV audience.
