Another storm rolled into parts of the Alps on Friday with further snow falling over the weekend.

Cervinia in the Aosta Valley in Italy has had a fabulous start to winter but the new snow has its downside.

Bad weather conditions caused qualifications to be cancelled at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Snowboard Cross World Cup on Friday.

The event was able to go ahead on Saturday.

The Women’s World Cup race in Val d’Isere was also delayed on Saturday morning, and then cancelled altogether.

Heavy snowfall also caused the cancellation today of the  Alpine Skiing World Cup in Val Gardena in Italy.

Markus Waldner, chief race director for World Cup men, admitted, “Mother Nature told us – ‘Stop'”.

Meanwhile the storm took its toll elsewhere too as it approached.

PlanetSKI reader, Vanessa Fisher, is in Les Menuires in Les3Vallees.

“Made it over to Val Thorens in the sunshine this morning but the ominous looking clouds sitting up high over the Pointe du Voucher and Cime de Caron ridgeline moved in bringing 35/40km winds and slowly the resort started shutting down,” Vanessa said on Thursday.

“We made a quick exit, avoiding the crowds trying to get up the 3Vallees bubble link (chair closed), skied the long traverse Bd Cumin back to Les Menuires and headed up La Masse…which promptly shut down as we had a quick lunch.”

“Great fun cruising back down the empty slopes. Linked via Roc 1& 2 to Meribel and back up and over to Saint Martin making the most of what was left open.”

“Pistes pretty firm as the wind has blown any fresh snow away but more snow is forecast over the weekend perfect timing for Christmas skiers, fingers crossed the wind will die down a bit too.”

“Oh, and we saw some penguins too.”

Thousands and thousands of skiers and snowboarders are arriving in resorts in time for Christmas.

Staff at Ski Weekender are getting in the mood.

However there have been some travel problems.

The first Eurostar train of the season was due to go overnnight on Friday, but was cancelled because of industrial action in France.

Here at PlanetSKI we will be updating this rolling story across the weekend so do check back…

And while we are on the subject of snow, check out these images we have just received from Banff in Canada.

They showcase the snow in the Big 3 resorts of Sunshine Village, Lake Louise and Mt Norquay:
