$250,000 Reward as Cables Cut Again on Gondola

The Sea-to-Sky gondola at the Canadian resort of Squamish has had its cables deliberately cut causing gondolas to plunge to the ground. It’s put the lift out of action as winter approaches. It was vandalised in the same way last year.

The cables were cut earlier this month and now the resort is offering a reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of the vandal or vandals.

30 gondolas have been damaged.

Estimates for repairs are more than $5m.

An unknown vandal cut the 55-millimeter-thick cable in a swift operation that required skill.

An investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is ongoing.

No injuries were reported.

Here’s the General Manager, Kirby Brown.

The cables were cut in August 2019 as well, as we reported at the time on PlanetSKI.

Gondola repairs to cost millions

Repairs took six months with 4kms of new cable needed and 30 replacement cabins.

Repairs cost more than $5 million.

The gondola accesses numerous ski touring zones in the winter and carries 400,000 people each year.

“The gondola line was cleared and all staff and guests are safe,” said a statement on the resort’s web site when the incident happened.

“As history has shown, we are a resilient team and community.

“We want to thank everyone for their outpouring of support and we will be sharing information as it becomes available.

“The gondola is closed and we ask that the public stay away from the area for the safety of everyone.”
