NIFTY NASSFELD PART II - James Rampton, Nassfeld, Austria
Saturday January 13, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

The literal translation of the Austrian ski resort Nassfeld is 'Wet Field.' Let's be honest it doesn't sound too enticing! Read our second instalment from Nassfeld. NEW

But never judge a book by the cover.

Nassfeld is nifty.

The resort, which is often overshadowed by more glitzy and glamorous Austrian Alpine destinations such as Kitzbuehel and St Anton, may seem like a little guy amongst such titans.

But, although it is far from the most famous resort in the Alps, it very much punches above its weight.

Nassfeld is very friendly and down to earth.

It is, thank the Lord, mercifully free of skiers posing on the slopes in excessive jewellery and over-the-top fur coats (and that's just the men).

Crystal have added Nassfeld to their offering this season, and it looks to be an excellent choice.

As Roman Mischitz, our very affable guide and local ski school instructor, told PlanetSKI over a coffee this morning: "the skiing is wonderful in Nassfeld. It is back-country heaven. We also have fantastic heli-skiing here."

Roman, who also enjoys a burgeoning career as an acoustic guitarist (his debut album is out in April and details can be found on his website,, adds that, "Above all, this resort is very relaxed.

"Nothing is that rushed here. It's very family friendly, and there is no party scene. There is no bling in Nassfeld!"

There may be "no bling in Nassfeld", but what there is, is splendid skiing.

Boasting 110 km of pistes, the resort can be enjoyed by skiers of all levels.

It is certainly testing enough for the advanced downhiller, as is evidenced by the fact that the Austrian Women's Team was training here just last week.

It is also extraordinarily easy on the eye - as we discovered to our delight today.

Catching the first lift up the mountain, we enjoyed blue-skies skiing all day long.

Nassfeld's resident "seasonal sun calculator" was working overtime today.

All the runs are open, and they have exceptionally good snow.

As a naff TV gameshow host once put it: "Come on down!"

At this time of year, the pistes in Nassfeld are blissfully quiet.

In fact, often today we were skiing on our own, with only the stunning views for company.

This is another advantage of being in one of the less high-profile Austrian resorts.

It was one of those perfect days which remind us why we love so skiing so much.

The motto of Carinthia, the Austrian region where Nassfeld is the largest resort, is emblazoned on the jackets of the ski-school instructors.

It reads: "Lust For Life".

That's exactly what we felt relishing the sun and the slopes today.

In fact, that is such a good phrase, someone should write a song entitled "Lust For Life" - oh, they already have!
