AND SO IT ENDS... - James Cove, Swiss Alps

The PlanetSKI Swiss road and rail trip draws to a close. We look back on a week of some fabulous skiing & great adventures.

I am a sucker for road trips and if they are to resorts I have never been to before or even heard of then so much the better.

OK there are usually a few transport problems and the endless packing and unpacking can get a bit boring but these pale into insignificance by the adventure and excitement.

I urge all of you to get a Swiss Travel pass and get on the road (and rail)!

First up was the little-known resort of Vercorin that sits at the head of the Val d'Anniviers  in the Valais canton.

It is directly across the valley from the more famous Swiss resort of Crans-Montana.
Next up it was St-Luc/Chandolin - perhaps the prettiest of them all with some fabulous skiing to match.

I have visited before and look forward to doing so again.
And then it was on to the neighbouring valley of Val d'Herens to the resort of Nax.

It turned out to be a gem of a freeride resort with huge amounts of snow.
All of these resorts, including Crans-Montana, are on a new joint lift pass, The Magic Pass.

It covers 25 different resorts with more than 1,000kms of skiing and has proved to be a big success this winter.

It was sold at a discount of CHF359 (£270) when it was launched last spring, and when the offer closed the resorts had sold enough passes to account for almost all of their average winter turnover.

The 25 ski resorts are: Anzère, Bugnenets-Savagnières, Charmey, Crans-Montana Aminona, Crêt-du-Puy, Grimentz-Zinal, Jaun, La Berra, La Lécherette, Les Diablerets, Les Marécottes, Les Mosses, Les Paccots, Leysin, Mayens de Conthey, Moléson, Nax - Mt-Noble, Ovronnaz, Rathvel, Schwarzsee, St-Luc/Chandolin, Tramelan, Vercorin & Villars-Gryon.

See below for an earlier PlanetSKI article on this pass and a number of other new initiatives in Switzerland.

Now I said earlier that I like unknown resorts, but I happen to love perhaps the most famous ski resort in the world - Zermatt.

If I could only ever ski in one resort for the rest of my life then it would be Zermatt without a moment's hesitation.

Why?

I have posted a short piece about my 48-hours in my favourite resort and it may give you a few indications:

But first there was the little matter of getting up the mountain at all as another huge storm rolled in.
And now I'm heading home as the storm eases.

Thank you Switzerland - it's been an absolute pleasure.
