INVESTIGATION & WARNINGS AFTER AVALANCHES & DEATHS

A 44-year old man and his 11-year old daughter have died in an avalanche in Val d'Isere. A man perished in a fall in a couloir in La Grave. PlanetSKI reports.




The father and daughter were from Paris and it is reported they were on a closed run in Val d'Isere when they were hit by an avalanche and completely buried under the snow.  

A major search and rescue operation was launched but they were found dead. 

They had been skiing in the Pisaillas glacier area of the resort that was closed at the time because of the avalanche risk.

The two skiers were part of a larger group.

An investigation is underway and we will bring you more details when we get them.  

Meanwhile a 40-year old man from Grenoble died as he descended the Chirouze couloir in the cult off piste resort of La Grave.  

He was with two friends at the time.  

They called in the emergency services but he was pronounced dead.

 Over in the French Pyrenees investigations continue into an avalanche that killed three people last week.

The accident happened last Wednesday and the bodies of the three men were discovered a day later after a huge search operation.

They were off-piste near the ski resort of Cauterets in the Hautes-Pyrenees in France when the avalanche struck. 

A helicopter, dog teams and rescuers searched for the the missing French skiers.

Investigations are now underway to establish exactly what happened.

They were not named as next-of-kin were informed. 

They are all French nationals two were 38-years old and the other 29.

They came from Bordeaux and Poitiers.

Full details of the accident have not been reported.

It followed significant snow in the area accompanied by high winds.

The authorities are urging all people that ski off piste to exercise the utmost caution in the present conditions and to use a qualified professional.

On Tuesday, a skier died in Gavarnie resort, not far from Cauterets, due to the treacherous conditions and snow slipping.

Across the Pyrenees in Baquiera Beret in Spain a huge avalanche has come down across the piste hitting skiers.

The fate of the person hit by the avalanche remains unknown.

Meanwhile the bodies of two- mountain rescue technicians have been recovered after an an avalanche at Mt Grignetta in Italy.

The victims were named as 37-year old Giovanni Giarletta and Ezio Artusi who was 46.   There are unconfirmed reports a third man may have been hit by the avalanche.
