In the Val d'Anniviers is the 15th Century village of Grimentz, known for its extensive off piste skiing, touring terrain & varied pistes. NEW

It's a traditional and quaint Swiss village made up of 15th Century mazots and chalets.

An authentic alpine village, but with a modern lift system...

A recently constructed gondola links to the ski area of Zinal - giving 220km of piste to ski (plus all that famous backcountry).

The wooden houses along the cobbled streets of Grimentz are sun-blackened and during summer the place bursts with the red of blooming geraniums.

It is mainly skied by locals and visited by Swiss day-trippers from Sierre and Sion.

There are a handful of hotels or the UK company Mountain Heaven has eight self-catered chalets in the village.

Mountain Heaven, who specialises in providing both catered and self-catered chalets in Europe's most special resorts, has written a blog on why you should choose Grimentz.
The views are lauded and the uncrowded pistes boasted.

Then there's the rustic charm of the village, and, to top it all off, the freeriding life and freestyle in the snowparks.

"The village is more suited to those who like a sense of the older days," Mountain Heaven describes.

"...with century old buildings that create a special atmosphere and a range of tasteful bars and restaurants whilst providing great runs on the unspoiled mountainside."

The Val d'Anniviers is a favourite of PlanetSKI.

We visited some of the other resorts back in January of this year:

The nursery area is mid-mountain, which means sun, views and fun learning.

The varied runs include a lot of reds and blacks for the more advanced, as well as the off piste.

'Garde de Bordon' has steep, powder slopes and nearby Zinal has an avalanche training centre in the area.

Have you heard of The Imperial Crown?

It's five 4,000-metre peaks - Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Obergabelhorn, Dent-Blanche and the Matterhorn.

We'd suggest taking the time out of skiing to follow a winter hiking trail, or perhaps go old-school and do some ski touring.

The scenery is much better enjoyed at a slower pace.

There's a public pool and a natural ice-rink in Grimentz and a toboggan run to enjoy.

It has been described as Europe's best-kept skiing secret.

Mountain Heaven recommends a little apres ski in Chez Florioz, at the bottom of the slopes.

Good music and good vibes, the place serves food and is always packed for happy hour to close the ski day.

Have we already said we're sold on Grimentz?

There's even a night club, Disco Shaddock, that's open until 3am.

Local restaurants serve fondue and traditional Swiss dishes of the region.

Go romantic at Restaurant Moiry for an old-world feel, or chill out at Arlequin with a pizza...
