RAMPAGING RAMPTON AT SNOWBOXX DAY ONE - James Rampton, Snowboxx - Avoriaz
Sunday March 18, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

PlanetSKI's roving & rampaging reporter is in Avoriaz. Enjoying the music line-up & taking a turn or two. Here's his first report on what's going on.

Fatboy Slim and Fat Skis.

Both are on offer this week at Snowboxx - an Alpine music festival of the highest quality.

Returning to Avoriaz for the third successive season, Snowboxx has a line-up that most Alpine music festivals would sell their brand-new Rossignol racing skis for.

In addition to Fatboy Slim, who will be playing to more than 6000 adoring Alpine fans this evening, this year's bill features such crowd-pleasing acts as Chase & Status DJ Set and Rage, Loyle Carner, Youngr, Fred V & Grafix, Artful Dodger, Kideko, Snakehips, Stefflon Don, Steve Lawler, Abode, Danny Howard, Mark Knight, Leftwing & Kody, Max Chapman, Purple Disco Machine and Snakehips.

This year, Altitude Comedy - a longterm favourite of PlanetSKI's - will also make its bow at Snowboxx.

At the XX Club, punters can laugh their ski-socks off at such top-drawer comedians as Andrew Maxwell, Abandoman and Matt Reed.

Now in its sixth year, Snowboxx is also offering such fun activities as laser tag, snowball fights and human bowling.

The latter is a new one on us; it looks like a compelling new sport in which intrepid souls attempt to knock over giant inflatable skittles by hurling themselves downhill in a massive zorb ball.

Avoriaz is an excellent choice to host Snowboxx.

The resort has a really appealing design; its modern blocks appear to tumble down the mountainside in the most eye-catching manner.

The French resort also boasts the largest connected ski area in the world.

It has an eye-watering 650 km of pistes, encompassing both France and Switzerland.

As PlanetSKI walk around the ski in, ski out resort, we notice another enormous benefit: the resort has no cars - hallelujah!

Another plus is the fact that the snow is superb this week.

Avoriaz enjoyed a huge fall yesterday, and it is coming down thick and hard again today.

This is creating wonderful powder, even on the pistes.

This is where the aforementioned fat skis can come into their own.

We even had time to stop for lunch today in the gloriously named Yeti restaurant.

The branding in the restaurant was spot-on.

We were especially taken by the sign advising yetis to use the back door.

We even found a nearby igloo where we could hide if the yetis decided to go on the rampage - I mean, they're not known for their cuddliness, are they?

We will report on Fatboy Slim's eagerly awaited gig tomorrow.

As PlanetSKI prepared to get in the mood for his show tonight in the Apres, Snowboxx's official bar, we noticed a sign at the entrance.

It read: "All runs lead to Apres."

Sounds perfect to us.

All runs lead to apres 🤣Thanfully ..... all runs lead to apres 🤣
