OLYMPIANS IN LAAX FOR THE BRITS - Jane Peel, Laax, Switzerland
Sunday April 1, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

Snowboarding Olympic medallists are in Europe's top freestyle resort this week as the 2018 BRITS gets under way. PlanetSKI is there.

Billy Morgan is sure to get a hero's welcome after his bronze in the Winter Olympics inaugural big air competition in South Korea in February.

And later in the week, the athlete who made history by winning Great Britain's first official Olympic medal on snow in Sochi in 2014, Jenny Jones, will be making an appearance.

PlanetSKI spoke to her in Les Arcs last week as the French resort held its Great British Celebration.

The BRITS - the British Snowboard and Freeski Championships - welcomes not just seasoned pros aiming to be crowned the best of British, but up-and-coming young athletes, competition novices and veterans keen to show they've still got it.

The championships are open to anyone with a British passport and the youngest competitors are usually just eight years old.

The sport begins on Tuesday.

There will be four days of competition - unless the weather conspires to drag it out as has happened in the past - and several nights of partying.

"The BRITS is bang on," Billy Morgan said.

"You get to ride the best freestyle park in the world, and get a taste of proper competition, but in this encouraging environment with all your mates.

"The parties aren't bad either... which is nice."

And Billy Morgan certainly knows how to party.

Morgan will be joined in Laax by several of his teammates from the GB Park and Pipe Olympic squad, including James 'Woodsy' Woods, who came fourth in the ski slopestyle in Pyeongchang.

We're in Laax all this week so look out for our reports and social media posts.

The weather forecast means that some of the events may have to be moved or curtailed but here's the planned competition schedule:
  • Tuesday 3rd - Snowboard cross and ski big air
  • Wednesday 4th - Snowboard big air and ski cross
  • Thursday 5th - Snowboard slopestyle and ski halfpipe
  • Friday 6th - Snowboard halfpipe and ski slopestyle

The big air event returned to the BRITS last year and proved a huge draw.

It's sponsored by Picture Organic Clothing whose pro-rider is Jenny Jones.  She'll be presenting the medals.

The 2018 championships will also see the return of a competition launched last year to reward the best rising stars of skiing and snowboarding under the age of 18.

The Ritblat Endeavour Awards are sponsored by UK snowsports supporters, the real estate company Delancey.

Each competitor in the ski and snowboard big air will be filmed in practice, qualification and finals.

A panel of experienced judges will decide who has performed the best tricks, regardless of whether it's in training or competition.
