PlanetSKI hits some of the Tirol's finest resorts from the centre of its capital city. What's a city & ski break like? See our round-up of the trip.

Innsbruck is not just one of our favourite cities in the Alps, it is one of our favourites in Europe.

It is steeped in history.

The earliest traces of inhabitation in Innsbruck come from the stoneage period.

In the 4th Century the Romans garrisoned the town to provide military coverage to the trade routes.

In 1278 the town passed into the hands of Count Tyrol.

It flourished in the following centuries as a town near vital European trade routes.

Innsbruck became the capital of the Tirol in 1429 and it became a centre of European politics and culture as Emperor Maximilian 1 lived in the city in the 1490s.

A visit to his tomb in Hofkirch is a must.

And guess what makes it our favourite European city?

It has its own ski area, Nordkette, with the base lift right in the heart of the city.

It goes up to 2,200m and has some very decent skiing for all abilities.

And if you want to go further afield within an hour or so are Solden, St Anton, Pitztal, Kuhtai, Stubai, Obergurgle and many, many more.

On our visit earlier this month we skied Kuhtai and Stubai, check out the blogs below that our editor, James Cove, wrote at the time.
