A skier who tried to jump the crowd at the Copper Mountain pond-skimming event is charged with third-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

Pond skimming is a light hearted event known for its funny costumes, whacky hairstyles with skiers and snowboarders dunking into ice cold water.

It is an event that usually marks the end of the ski season and occurs at many ski areas around the globe.

It is an event that has been hosted by Copper Mountain Ski resort in the USA for the past 22 years.

But this year it took a turn for the worst on Saturday 14th April.

27 year old Hayden Patrick Wright, from Englewood, Colorado skied into a crowd of spectators during the final round.

According to witnesses, it was reported to the Summit County Sheriff Ofice that Wright intentionally jumped into the crowd causing injury to spectators.

News reporters stated at the time, that one woman broke her collar bone, while some others suffered minor injuries.

One witness said that Wright had told him he was intending to jump over the crowd.

On Thursday 26th April, Wright was charged with third-degree assault and reckless endangerment, both misdemeanors.

Local reports at the time thought Wright may face Felony Charges:

How the event unfolded on 14th April:

The competition was paused for 15 minutes.

Wright, of Englewood, was photographed with a bloody mary in his hand and was reportedly telling people he was going to “jump the crowd.
