THE WORLD'S TOP RESORTS - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Tuesday May 1, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

They welcome more skiers and snowboarders than all the rest, so which resorts do you think have made it into the Top 50?

The 2018 ranking is based on the average number of 'skier visits' over the past few seasons.

One person taking part in any downhill activity on any one day is classed as one skier visit.

The figures, based on information provided from the ski areas themselves, have been pulled together by the respected Swiss consultant, Laurent Vanat for his 2018 International Report on Snow and Mountain Tourism.

We reported on the main points from the report in our earlier article:
But we love a list so, once again, we give you all of the top resorts below. For some reason, there are actually 51, not 50.

It doesn't mean they're the best resorts, just the ones with the most visitors.

And the winner is .....

.... Roche de Mio Bellecote La Plagne, France

......La Plagne, in France.

Again.

PlanetSKI's Katie Bamber visited in January to find out what the resort has to offer and what's new:

La Plagne also gives access to some spectacular off-piste, as Ian Davis discovered on a ski touring trip in March:

Many ski areas maintain their position in the table but there are three new entries: Kaprun in Austria, and two resorts in Sweden.

Åre, the largest ski resort in Scandinavia sneaks into the final spot at number 51, but Sälen storms up the table from nowhere to take 18th place.

Where?

Sälen.

Sälen, SwedenSälen, Sweden

Like Åre, Sälen is owned by Skistar.

This is how it describes the resort on its website:

One of Sweden's best-loved resorts, consisting of four ski areas: Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället. Enjoy more than 100 slopes in all directions and an extensive snow system that guarantees great skiing all season long.

Here you'll find over fifty restaurants, several adventure areas for children and Experium, which is home to a water park and lots of activities.

In Sälen you'll also find Snow Parks, daycare and the flagship store SkiStarShop Concept Store.

Choose between luxurious lodge accommodation, fully equipped apartments or cosy cabins.

So, now you know.

In 2017, there were only 49 resorts on the table so, with three new entries, one has dropped out.

It's Jungfrauregion in Switzerland, which had been placed at 39th in 2016, fell to 48th in 2017 and has now lost its place in the list.

Jungfrauregion includes Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren.
