FIRST SNOW DOWN UNDER - James Cove, PlanetSKI Editor

The first falls have come down in Australia with the season kicking off next month. It's early days but signs are promising there and elsewhere in the southern hemisphere. NEW & UPDATED

The first snow of the winter has fallen this weekend in Lesotho in Africa.

It's not enough to ski yet but the season at Afriski is due to begin on 7th June and continue to 26th August.

Mount Hotham has had 10cm of snow in the past couple of days with up to 40cm in the forecast.

The temperature has dropped and snow is falling above 1,000m.

At Perisher the snow guns were tested earlier this month:

And now there's enough natural snow for the first snowmen of the winter:

A cold front has moved in on Perisher blanketing the resort with 20cm of fresh snow.

"We welcome the early storm and fingers crossed it's a sign of good things to come as the excitement builds for opening weekend! This storm brought with it some chilly temperatures too, presenting the opportunity for our snowmaking team to fire up the snow guns," said a statement from the resort.

The resort opens on June 9th.

PlanetSKI's Alex Cove will be working in Perisher as a ski instructor from June through to September so will be keeping us updated on all that is going on in the resort.

Our reporter, Lewis Panther, was in Perisher last year:
"The weather is certainly letting us know that winter is on its way. When we see this sort of weather early on in the year, it bodes well for a good ski season," said the Thredbo resort communications manager, Suzi Diver.

Here at PlanetSKI we'll be updating this story with more pictures and information.

And why are we so concerned about the early season snow in Australia here at PlanetSKI?

We are planning a trip to Australia and New Zealand this summer to see what winter is like Down Under.

We'll be watching things rather carefully so do check back... Cool
