Memorial Day was the end of winter for the few US resorts still skiing. Just a handful left open in North America enjoying the remaining snow.

4th JUNE, 2018

Arapahoe Basin closes for Winter 17/18 with the classic pond skimming event.

A couple of thousand turned out to the mountain for closing day.

"It has been quite a year. Despite only having 85% of normal snowfall, we had a lot of great ski days ... In about 4 months, we will be preparing to re-open.

"With a new lift and 468 acres in The Beavers and Steep Gullies, next season will be even better," Al's Blog on the Arapahoe Basin website states.

Thank you for another incredible ski and ride season! From Opening Day to powder days to Beach days, it was a rockin' winter -  A-Basin's social media pages read.

Memorial Day in the US of A - Monday 28th May - has seen big celebrations in mountain resorts.

It's the date many resorts have been holding out for, to finish Winter 17/18 on a high.

Here's how it looked in those that made it:

Mount Bachelor in Oregon posted on its Facebook page:

Another incredible day of skiing, riding, biking, and pond skimming!
Thank you everyone for an amazing winter... only 3 weeks until bike season!
Stay tuned this week for a video recap, a full album of pond skim, and more summer hype!

The last weekend in May sees a handful of ski resorts close operations for winter in the USA.

Last winter it was a slightly different story as massive season snowfall saw several skiing through August, but more of that below...

Here's where has shut and where is still good to ski:

Squaw Valley will close after this weekend, on 28th June.

Spring showoffs:

Mount Bachelor also stops skiing for summer on Sunday after a closing party that promises to be the best ever at the mountain (check back in for photos of the season's end celebrations soon)

Arapahoe Basin is now a June baby and planning to run until 3rd June.

Killington in Vermont ended its skiing on Friday for its East Coast skiers and riders.

It's the longest season in the East and we've gotta give it kudos for effort.

Here's how it looked ahead of Friday:

And apart from America's only glacier, Timberline Lodge and Mammoth Mountain that's it for USA.

Another suggestion: head to Whistler's glacier where you'll get some sweet freestyle action.

Mammoth in California is usually open into June, but after poor snowfall this winter it was feared it might shut early.

A series of spring storms has allowed the resort to continue operations.

"Throughout the state of California, this wasn't a great snow year," said the resort in a statement.

"The prevailing thought was because of the snow situation, we wouldn't have a late season. But the recent storms really set us up to have the kind of spring season we're having."

The rest of the US resorts:

The popular North California resort of Squaw Valley is still going on the ski front.

A projected closing date of 28th May means there's only a few days left...

Mt Bachelor in Oregon
will close this weekend, after a big end-of-season bash on 27th May.

There'll be skiing, biking and, of course, pond skimming.

In Arapahoe Basin it snowed just days ago on May 18th - big, fat, wet flakes.

And now it's time to celebrate in the sun before it's set to close after this weekend on 28th May.

Killington, Vermont
- A surprise, no?

Skiing on Friday, 25th May will bring an end to the ski season on the East Coast of the United States.

Ski while there's still snow to slide on is the resort's mantra.

And thanks to a great season of snowfall in the Vermont ski resorts, there's a little left...

Then there's Timberline Lodge, the USA's only ski glacier, which started its spring skiing special on May 13th.

The real summer skiing session will commence on 10th June and go through August, with a projected end date of 30th.

And elsewhere in North America, Whistler in Canada shut down for winter yesterday, 21st May.

But Whistler's Hortsman Glacier - famous as a training zone for freestyle skiers during the summer months - will open on 9th June for camps and park riders.

11am - 3pm it's open until 15th July.
