John Bromell disappeared in poor weather in Tignes last January. It allows the family to have closure, but others remain missing in the Alps.



The French police have confirmed that a body found in Tignes last week is that of 39-year-old John Bromell from near Gainsborough in Lincolnshire.

He was on a week's snowboarding holiday with friends in Tignes in January.

He was last seen in deteriorating weather conditions at 4.30pm on 7th January on the Paquis chairlift in the Lavachet area.

He was reported missing at 11pm that when he failed to return to his accommodation.

The local police put out a major alert but dreadful conditions hampered efforts to find him.

Mr Bromell's disappearance came during a period of heavy snowfall and high avalanche risk in Tignes.

Melting snow has revealed the bodies of several skiers and snowboarders who went missing in the Alps and North America over the winter.

It has allowed families to have closure on their loss, but others remain missing.

In the Alps others missing including a 57-year old Swiss man caught in an avalanche in the Vallon d'Arbi in Verbier that claimed the lives of three others.

It was the worst avalanche incident in the Swiss Alps last winter.

The body of the German billionaire, 58- year old Karl-Erivan Haub, also remains missing.

He disappeared while undertaking a day ski tour on his own in Zermatt.

Earlier this week we reported that a body believed to be that of a 24-year-old snowboarder last seen in January had been found near the Mt Baker ski resort in the state of Washington in the USA.

Vitaliy Datskiy was reported missing on 21st January when he failed to arrive at a designated meeting point.

His body was found on the north face of Pan Dome and it appeared he had ducked under a rope.

His family were present as the body was recovered.

Search dogs in Bear Valley, California, have located the body of Thomas Mullarky who had been missing since 14th March.

A 5-day search was carried out at the time but no trace of the 65-year old could be found.

Specially trained German shepherd dogs were sent out again last week and detected the scent of human remains in the Groove Gully area of the resort.

Searchers then found a ski pole and ski protruding from the snow.

They found his body just beneath the surface.

In Chamonix in France, the body of a Swiss snowboarder was found on May 12th.

He was killed in an avalanche on 4th March and his body was found as his snowboard was seen protruding out of the snow.

In the resort of Whitefish in the USA the body of Dr Jonathan Torgerson has been found.

He went missing on 17th February in an avalanche zone on the north side of the resort.

According to the local Sheriff's Office, the warming temperatures and snow conditions contributed to the successful recovery.
