NEW WARNING ON SKI HOLIDAY COSTS - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Friday June 29, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

Ski holiday prices are set to rise further as a result of Brexit, says the company that owns Inghams, Esprit Ski and Ski Total.

Hotelplan UK, which employs 1,200 British staff overseas in the ski season, is among several operators to predict an increase.

Its Chief Executive, Paul Carter, said Brexit was likely to add around £30 to £50 to the cost of a chalet holiday if British chalet companies were no longer allowed to post UK staff to EU countries.

He told the ABTA Travel Matters conference this week that while Hotelplan was looking at replacing its seasonal British staff overseas with European workers, it would have to pay higher wages to comply with local employment laws.

He said ski operators were lobbying the UK government and authorities abroad to stress the value of chalet holiday but it was possible that existing business models would have to change.

"The freedom of movement does challenge us, we do have options but I think it is likely chalet holidays will be more expensive and so there will be fewer chalet holidays in the future and maybe more self-catering instead," he told the conference.

PlanetSKI has reported extensively on the ski industry's response to Brexit and to changes in EU rules that are already having an impact on the chalet holiday:

The comments from the Hotelplan boss come as Inghams launches its brochure for next winter, offering new deals it says will help customers save money.

"Our new Ski Inclusive bundles reward guests who pre-book their lift passes, ski/board and boot hire with big savings," CEO Paul Carter says.

" We also go the extra mile for groups, with some of the best discounts in the business including up to one in seven goes free!

"We can't wait for winter and we look forward to welcoming our guests out on the slopes!"

Inghams is adding four new resorts in Europe next winter - Sölden (Austria), La Clusaz (France), Samoëns (France), and Courmayeur (Italy) - and introducing two twin-centre holidays in Canada.
