Two snowboarders were carried 130m by an avalanche in New Zealand, but survived the ordeal. Safety warning have been issued after heavy snowfall. NEW

The accident happened at the Remarkables ski resort near Queenstown on the south island.

They were in an off piste and unpatrolled area.

The pair was carried on top of the slide that ran out on a frozen lake.

"With the recent snow fall we have seen a significant wind slab hazard occur in the back country," said the Ski Patrol.

"These are large avalanches to be triggered by a single human load and the potential for this to occur in our backcountry is considerable.

"The difference between in bounds and out of bounds snowpacks is very prominent right now.

"Please be aware that terrain we have open has been mitigated with explosives and skier traffic and is not representative of what the backcountry snowpack is doing.

"Please come and see us before you head into the back country but remember that you are responsible for your own decisions and safety while out there. Have fun and play safe."

The pair was correctly equipped and it is reported they had dug a snow pit before the avalanche to check the stability of the snowpack.

A further 40cm of snow fell in the area this week and New Zealand has had a strong start to winter as we have reported elsewhere on PlanetSKI.
