SUMMER IN LES GETS: PART 2 - James Rampton, Les Gets
Tuesday July 3, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

PlanetSKI's roving reporter, James Rampton is in the ski area of Les Gets, and he's gone all yogic on us. Downward-facing dogs...

When you practice yoga in the UK, you are usually confined to a sweaty room with a view of a blank wall.

It's rather different when you do your Downward-Facing Dog in Les Gets in the French Alps.

Here, as your strike your Half Lord of the Fishes pose, you are perched on top ‎of a mountain drinking in a stunning vista of Mont Blanc.

In our continuing summer quest to show you that the Alps can be just as much fun without snow as with it, PlanetSKI is this week ‎in the pretty French resort of Les Gets.

‎Today, we are sampling the joys of Mountaintop Yoga.

In the village we meet Barbara Porret, our very friendly teacher, who runs Keolan Yoga in Les Gets.

It is a simply gorgeous day.

This area is called Les Portes du Soleil - and today it very much lives up to its name.

We pause at the top of the Mont Chery cable car to take in the breathtaking view of the surrounding chain of peaks, which boast such evocative names as La Dent du Geant (the Giant's Tooth), Mont Maudit (The Cursed Mountain) and L'Aiguille du Midi (The Needle of Midi).

But the crowning glory of the scene is the snow-laden Mont Blanc.

From Mont Chery, you can see Mont Blanc in a whole new light - and ‎you thought they only made fountain pens.

Wandering along a mountain track from the top of Mont Chery, the sound of cowbells is so persistent, you feel as if you are channeling Franz Klammer throwing himself headlong down the Hahnenkamm - without the death-defying speed or the yellow jumpsuit, obviously.

As we wend our way towards lunch, Barbara stops us every so often and takes us through a light yoga work-out.

PlanetSKI is particularly proud of its Warrior.

As we adopt poses such as The Tree and The Mountain (not an attempt to mimic the gigantic character from Game of Thrones), the innate sense of relaxation that yoga brings is only enhanced by these blissful surroundings.

After a couple of hours, we arrive at our destination, the very pleasant Les Chevrelles mountaintop restaurant.

Unwinding after a strenuous morning, PlanetSKI downs a well-deserved (in our opinion, anyway) "serieux" beer and ham and cheese omelette.

When we ask the patron of Les Chevrelles for the restaurant's wifi code, he tells us there isn't any.

He informs us that, "It's ‎good to disconnect."

We couldn't agree more.
