The Ski Club of Great Britain has announced a Young Leader Award, giving the under-25s a chance to win a free place on its leaders' training course in the Alps this winter.

The scholarship, worth more than £3,000, has been set up in memory of Chief Executive Frank McCusker, who died suddenly last summer.

The successful candidate will win free travel from London and a place on the 12-day course in early December to learn leadership skills, performance on and off piste, navigation, avalanche safety and snow craft.

The course is run by experienced mountain guides, instructors and Ski Club staff and would normally cost participants £2,999, excluding flights.

It's most recently been based in Zermatt in Switzerland but was previously held in Tignes in France.

Although the 2018 venue has not yet been announced, it's thought likely it will return to Tignes, even though the Club is unable to offer a leading service in France:

If the winner of the Young Leader Award passes the course, he or she will be guaranteed a leading slot in one of 18 resorts in the 2018-19 season.

Qualified leaders are volunteers who show club members around ski resorts, on and off-piste, in Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Andorra, USA and Canada.

Typically, they will lead in a resort for two weeks each season, though some do more.

Experienced leaders also host the club's Freshtracks Holidays.

Applicants for the Young Leader Award must be aged 18 to 25 on 1st December 2018 and advanced or expert skiers or snowboarders, both on and off-piste.

They'll also be required to show that they have "enthusiasm and commitment to helping the snowsports community".

The Club says it has created the award in memory of Frank McCusker as he was passionate about getting younger people into snowsports.

He died of a heart attack at the age of 55 while on a cycling weekend in the UK in June 2017.

We reported on the news and the many tributes paid to him at the time:

Our editor, James Cove, wrote this obituary:

The deadline for applications for the Young Leader Award is 9th September with interviews taking place shortly afterwards.

More information on the course and award can be found here and you can apply online here.

The Ski Club Of Great Britain is a not-for-profit snowsports club with around 28,000 members.
