DRY SKI SLOPE SAVED - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Friday July 13, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

One of the UK's oldest dry ski slopes has been saved from closure after plans for a housing development were withdrawn.

Brentwood Park Ski and Snowboard Centre in Essex launched a campaign just over a year ago to fight a proposal to develop the entire site at Warley Gap, including the ski centre, go-karting track, golf academy, and restaurant.

It would have meant the slope and other businesses being demolished to make way for 13 new homes.

We reported on the threat to the slope - the only one in Essex -  in June 2017:

Now the application to build housing has been withdrawn.

The centre announced the news on its Facebook page, thanking supporters for all their help.

"Our local community rallied; those that have lived in Brentwood all their lives along with individuals and families that have moved away but still remember their experiences they shared here at Brentwood Park Ski & Snowboard Centre.

"People far and wide were shocked to learn that houses could take precedent over values that we all hold dear - enjoyment, learning, community, sport, being active, limitless opportunity.

"Individuals took the time to read through the proposal in full, talk to their friends and family and even write directly to the council not only opposing houses, but reminding them how invaluable we are and why!"

The campaign had the support of local businesses, schools, clubs, environmental groups, councillors, and Essex Ski Racing Club.

They were contacted by national ski clubs, snowsport governing bodies, ski personalities and even international skiers.

An online petition attracted 2,598 signatures and Brentwood Council received 160 objections to the housing development.

" All of the busineses on this site are viable and here at Brentwood Park Ski and Snowboard Centre along with the other businesses we continue to work alongside the site owner to build a successful future," the centre says.
