007 CENTRE OPENS IN SOELDEN - James Cove, PlanetSKI Editor
Friday July 13, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

As the James Bond actress Naomie Harris opens the new 007 centre in the Tirol we look at the legacy of Bond in the Alps.

The 007 ELEMENTS visitor experience is inside the Gaislachkogl Mountain high above the ski resort of Soelden.

It was one of the spectacular locations to feature in the last Bond feature film, Spectre.

PlanetSKI's senior reporter, Jane Peel, was on the mountaintop in October 2015 as the film was released around the world and we attended the Austrian premiere of the 007 film in Innsbruck:

The centre is described as a "cinematic installation".

It focuses on Spectre and is a celebration of the legacy of the James Bond films.

Construction of the structure in Soelden began in May 2017 and was completed just over a year later as we reported earlier:

It is said to be a highest visitor experience of its kind, at over 3,000m.

There are nine galleries and an outside plaza with views of the Alps.

On show is the original Land Rover Defender and Range Rover Sport SVR from Spectre and visitors learn how the action sequences were filmed in Soelden.

There are four James Bond OMEGA watches:

  • The Seamaster 300 from 'Spectre'
  • The laser watch from 'GoldenEye'
  • The Seamaster Quartz from 'Tomorrow Never Dies'
  • The Piton from 'The World Is Not Enough'

The uniforms designed by Bogner for the 007 ELEMENTS team and several Bogner ski suits worn by Bond over the years are also on display.

Here at PlanetSKI we were lucky enough to meet the man himself, Willie Bognor, at his ski shop in St Moritz back in 2014.

His shop has a window display commemorating his involvement with James Bond - first as a cameraman, then the ski stunt co-ordinator and then dressing 007 and the cast while in the mountains.

"For me skiing and James Bond are the perfect combination and it is so good that the Alps will feature again in the next film," he said to me as we chated about Bond and skiing.

"They are difficult sequences to shoot and of course the weather plays a huge role as conditions have to be perfect, but they can be perhaps the most memorable action sequences in the James Bond films," he added.

The Bond films are famous for some of their skiing sequences and you can see them all in this earlier PlanetSKI article.

Our favourite is the Roger Moore one in 'For Your Eyes Only' )and it's not the one where he skis over a cliff and pulls the string on a Union Jack parachute).

"It's fantastic to be here today at the launch of the brand new exhibition in this amazing location at the top of the Gaislachkogl mountain in Soelden," Harris said.

As the film was released we wrote about its possible commercial impact on the region in the Tirol.

After all it's not everywhere that is chosen as a location by the Bond producers.

"It was great to help bring Bond back to the snow in Austria and we hope a little bit of the success of the Bond movie will rub off on us," said Michael Waschl, the manager of the Das Central Hotel that runs the ICE Q restaurant.

He made his comments to PlanetSKI as the film was released.

"This is a great moment to showcase our region of the Tirol. The name of James Bond is known across the world and the film will be seen by many millions and they will be looking at our mountains," added Holger Gasler who looks after international marketing for the destination and was in London for the film's launch.

Jakob Falkner said 007 ELEMENTS puts Soelden and the wider Tirol region firmly on the map as a year-round destination for sports and entertainment in the Alps.

It is not the only Bond exhibition in the Alps.

In 1969 Murren in Switzerland was the setting for George Lazenby and 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'.

In 2013 George Lazenby returned to open a re-vamped exhibition, 'Bond World' as we reported at the time.

James Bond producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson of EON Productions, said they were proud to be launching the latest 007 experience.

"Architect Johann Obermoser, our Art Director Neal Callow and Tino Schaedler have created a Bondian lair worthy of a Ken Adam set in which visitors immediately become enveloped in the cinematic world of 007," they said.

007 ELEMENTS is accessed via the Gaislachkoglbahn Gondola in the resort village of Soelden.

Open daily from 9am to 3.30pm, tickets are available online or from the Bergbahnen Soelden ticket offices and cost €22 for adults, €12 for children.
