SKIERS STAY CALM AS VOLCANO ERUPTS - Katie Bamber, Senior News Reporter
Monday August 13, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

A volcano erupts at a ski resort. What to do? Keep calm and carry on skiing, of course.

It happened at a popular ski resort in South America.

Nevados de Chillan ski area in southern Chile is actually a cluster of volcanoes.

And last week, on Wednesday 8th August, Mother Nature showed its spots through the snow that has been falling this month in the Andes.

The plume of smoke and ash was said to be over 1,500m tall.

One man was in the best spot to catch the amazing event - on a chairlift to the summit:

Gonzalo Llamas Sebesta filmed the eruption above.

Headlines that have been doing the rounds since the blast have been 'blown up' in their drama and convey rather the opposite of the real-life situation.

What we imagine to be the atmpsohere during the eruption, bolstered by lines such as below, was not the case.

"...helpless skiers carried to volcano's summit..."

Instead with their Latin cool footage and responses they showed awe-filled calm, taking in the incredible phenomenon.

Skiers carried on skiing.

No pandemonium.

"Just another ski day in Chile πŸ‡¨πŸ‡±πŸ˜‚" wrote Chilean snowboarder @miss_ski.nanigans on Instagram.

In July it was reported that the volcano could erupt within days to weeks.

Just a little later on, so it did.

Nevados de ChillanThe resort's response

"Our Volcano has been appreciated all over the world," the Instagram acocunt of the resort wrote.

"For centuries we have lived with him and his rumblings have shown how great he is.

"We are on yellow alert and all necessary security measures are in place in case of an emergency.

"Respect the staff and do not go out of bounds."

There are six volcanoes in Nevados currently on alert by the National Emergency office but all are stage yellow.

Serious precautions do not take place until a stage-red warning is reached.

This is not new to the area.

In 2016 and in 2017 yellow alerts were issued and eruptions were witnessed.
