BIG INDOOR SKI CENTRE FOR AUSTRALIA
Wednesday August 15, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

Plans to build Australia's first mega indoor ski centre have been announced. A British former Olympic skier is involved.

A developer has submitted the proposals for a major indoor snow complex, the first of its kind in Australia.

'Winter Sports World'  will be in Penrith on the outskirts of Sydney in New South Wales.

The developer Peter Magnisalis says the centre will include a range of year-round winter sports activities for locals as well as domestic and international tourists.

"Underpinning this concept is an indoor ski centre with a ski slope designed to be one of the top 10 high performance training centres in the world," Mr Magnisalis he told the local Penrith newspaper, The Western Weekender.

The plans are for a 300 metre indoor downhill ski slope, an 80 metre training slope, a snow play area, an ice rink, ice climbing and rock climbing areas and fitness facilities.

There will also be a hotel, restaurants and bars.

The newspaper says the Performance Director of the centre will be the British former Olympic skier Stephen Edwards, who is now one of Australia's best known ski coaches.

He competed in the slalom at the 1992 Albertville games.

"Being able to train on an all-year-round facility will allow athletes to focus on their skills and technique in an environment where all weather conditions are controlled," Edwards is quoted as saying.

"It will also encourage more participation into the sport, helping us develop our grassroots athletes and grow a stronger, broader team of potential international competitors.

"We currently spend half the year overseas. WSW would allow us to prepare for competitions at home, reducing travel time and increasing training time in stable conditions."
