SHANGHAI PLANS WORLD'S BIGGEST SNOW DOME - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Friday August 31, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

China opened the world's largest indoor snow centre in 2017. Now it's planning an even bigger one to open as the country hosts the Winter Olympics.

Wintastar Shanghai will be in Lingang City in the Pudong New Area of China's biggest city and minutes away from the planned new Disney Resort.

The Singapore-based developers, KOP Limited (KOPL), claim it will be the largest Olympic-grade winter sports facility able to host world-class ski and snowboard competitions.

But it's no ordinary snow dome.

As you might expect in China, the development planned is much more than a couple of downhill slopes.

We're told it will feature a "ski-in ski-out resort, an ice hotel and several theatres".

There will also be shops and restaurants.

The project is planned to be completed by 2022, when China will host the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The development will aim to capitalise on the rapidly increasing interest in snowsports in China, which began when it was announced that the country would host the Olympics and which has also led to a rapid rise in ski resorts being built.

The ski and snowboard park will cover 90,000 square metres and will be operated by Majid al Futtaim - the owners of Ski Dubai and Ski Egypt.

The plan is for three ski slopes including one said to be of Olympics standard for training purposes.

KOPL, which announced the planned development in Singapore on Thursday, says it expects Wintastar Shanghai to attract around 3.2 million visitors each year, mainly from China.

"The timing for Wintastar Shanghai could not be better, with Chinese consumers yearning for travel, leisure, novel experiences and winter sports being the next big thing in China because of the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022," said Ong Chih Ching, Executive Chairman and Director of KOPL.

The company's official announcement says:

Professional skiers, amateurs, trainer/trainees adults and children alike can expect an awe-inspiring, richly-themed snow play and ski experience from a combination of three ski slopes of varying gradients including a slope of Olympics standard for training purposes; ski runs, and over 25 snow play attractions to cater to non-skiers.

The design, by award-winning Italian architect, Massimo Mercurio, is said to draw inspiration from "famed European alpine ski towns, natural iceberg formations and the charm of the alps.

Plans for the world's largest snow dome in Shanghai were first announced in 2015 but appear to have stalled until now.
