This time it's the Zugspitzbahn in Germany that is involved in a crash. It follows a fire at the the main lift to the Grands Montets in Chamonix.

In the latest accident one of two cabins on the Eibsee cable car that serves the ski town of Garmisch was damaged after a rescue cage broke loose due to a broken chain hoist.

It crashed into the 120 passenger cabin below at high speed.

No-one was injured in the incident and an investigation is now under way.

It is extremely fortunate it was a test rescue exercise and not the real thing.

The lift was only installed last winter and is state-of-the-art.

It has the tallest lattice tower at 127m, longest ropeway span at 13,213m and highest vertical rise - 1,944m.

It follows the huge fire at the mid-station to the Grands Montets that we reporter earlier in the week on PlanetSKI.

Chamonix and Garmisch are twinned resorts.

The resort authorities in Garmisch have been unable to recover the cabin or make a full assessment of the damage.

It has said it will "be closed for sure for several weeks".

The mountain top can still be reached by a cog railway and then another lift.

The damaged lift is at the extreme right of the piste map.
