How did the ski chalet industry fare last season? Where was the most popular resort & how many of us went by private jet?



The luxury chalet company Consensio has just published its annual look at the market.

The Chalet Ski Stats 2018 report draws on information provided by 25 chalet operators, mostly at top of the range, and 20 ski and travel agents.

It focuses on France and Switzerland.

We've picked out some nuggets for you.

The report says the most important factor in influencing a person's choice of ski holiday last season was the resort.

Sound obvious?

Well, the previous year price was more important than the resort.

The top 10 influencing factors in 2017-18 were:

1.  Resort
2.  Price
3.  Location
4.  Size of chalet (up 4 places from the previous year)
5.  Service
6.  Facilities
7.  Quality of food & drink
8.  Advice from operators & agents
9.  Travel inclusive
10.Transfer time

So where were the most popular resorts?

In France, the top 3 maintain their positions from the previous season.

Val d'Isere came out on top, followed by Meribel and then Courchevel, though the two resorts in Les3Vallees are now almost neck-and-neck after a fall in popularity for Meribel and a rise for Courchevel.

In Switzerland, Zermatt just pipped Verbier to take over the top spot.

The two resorts are way ahead of all the others with their nearest rival being St Moritz.

The overwhelming majority of tour operators said Switzerland was the most expensive country for a chalet holiday, however, 5% said France was now the priciest.

Some more headlines from the report:

  • The percentage of luxury chalet bookings that were made by UK customers fell from 55% to 39%
  • The good snow last season had a 77% positive impact on bookings
  • 34% of tour operators report a negative impact since the Brexit referendum - down from 50% the previous year
  • 50% of tour operators expect a negative impact from Brexit over the coming 12 months, 45% expect no impact while 5% expect a disastrous impact
  • Catered chalets are more popular than self-catered
  • Private ski guides are the main source of in-resort spending, followed by childcare then group ski school
  • 75% travel to their destination by scheduled airline
  • Easyjet is the most popular airline followed by BA & Swiss while Ryanair has decreased in popularity
  • 8% travel by private jet and 3% by helicopter
