Thursday December 6, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

More santas have been spotted around the mountains. The job of Father Xmas is now done, so what next? UPDATED

Here at PlanetSKI we continue our festive blog of all things Xmas as the big day happens.

Now what does the Man in Red do after all his hard work delivering the presents across the world?

He heads to New Quay in Wales to hook up with our, er, best friend - Fiona Best (AKA maddogFi) and her skiing, surfing and SUP mates.

After a spot of surfing and Stand Up Paddleboarding?

Now if you fancy booking a ski holiday today... you can't.

"We will be closed on Christmas Day but will be back to answer your calls on Boxing Day from 10am," said our friends over at Ski Amis.

"Keep your eyes peeled for our Boxing Day Sale with some massive discounts. Have a wonderful Christmas."

The Ski Amis teams out in the mountains remain hard at work:

The other tour operators are the same, but don't foget to check out some of THE best offers around: The PlanetSKI deals club

And then on Boxing Day get that ski holiday booked...

Meanwhile our readers are dotted around the mountains.

"Christmas morning in guess where? Happy Christmas everyone," said Ed Killick.

And just to show our global reach on PanetSKI here is one of our readers, Rebecca Henley, getting in the mood on Bondi beach in New South Wales, Australia.

As Santa arrived in the highest ski resort in the Alps, Val Thorens, he appears to have lost his sleigh and reindeer.

Not to be put off, he improvised and found another way to bring presents to town.

Express delivery.

Ho, ho, ho...

Meanwhile back in Santa's homeland, Svandinavia, Elisabeth Andreassen has been singing carols in Norway.

But who is Elisabeth?

And our readers have been posting their Xmas messages.

"Happy Christmas everyone ! May dreams come true in 2019!" said Simon Billinness from Verbier.

And another of our Verbier friends, Philippe May.

"Merry Christmas to all!!!"

While over in the Tirol in Innsbruck our great freind Holger Gasler has been getting into the spirit of things:

PS PlanetSKI will have a little announcement about Innsbruck shortly so watch this space ;-)

It seems the celebrities like a bit of Xmas cheer in the mountains.

Mariah Carey (and she knows a thing or two about Xmas) is currently in Aspen in Colorado.

She is with her 7-year old twins, Monroe and Moroccan, seven.

Meanwhile one of PlanetSKI's regular and loyal readers, Carol Chambers-Workman, has posted an image of her Xmas cake on social media.

"Christmas cake finished. With none of my tools etc I had to improvise. Merry Christmas everyone," said Carol.

Yum, yum...Yum, yum...

Happy Xmas Carol from us all at PlanetSKI!

Tens of thousands of skiers and snowboarders are arriving in their ski resort of choice this weekend for the Xmas week.

Looking forward to a fabulous festive time ahead.

The snow is looking good at altitude though the temperatures have warmed up so it is not so good low down.

See our latest full snow report here:

It looks pretty good for those arriving in Val d'Isere:

And there's certainly the Christmas mood in the Tirol in Austria:

And while we talking about the Tirol...

One of the most famous Christmas carols in the world is "Silent Night".

It was written 200 years ago in the Tirol and the bi-centenary is being celebrated this year.

Happy Christmas!

700 turned out at the Alyeska ski resort in the USA.

US TV was there to record the event.

And it's looking pretty festive in Andorra La Vella in the Pyrenees.

There is an Xmas market until 30th December, located in Plaça del Poble.

Thursdays 5pm - 8pm
Fridays: 5pm-9pm
Saturdays and 6,7,24,26,27,28 December 11am-9pm
Sundays 11am - 7pm.

There is a Magic Post Office in Avinguda Meritxell 26 until 5th January between 5:30pm and 7:30pm where children can post their letters to Father Christmas and the Three Kings on 6th January.

Epiphany, or the Three Kings, marks the 12th day of Christmas and it is a day that is as important to the Spaniards and Andorrans as Christmas Day.

There will also be a visit from Father Christmas on 24th December 6pm in Plaça del Poble.

A Three Kings Parade will be on 5th January 6:30pm-8:30pm.

Meanwhile the lifties have been making an effort to get us in the Christmas mood in Val d'Isere.

This is the brand new and very snazzy gondola from La Daille up to the Folie Douce.

It always looks more festive when the Christmas trees in ski resorts have snow on the branches.

They had plenty of snow in the French resort of Tignes at the start of the week and today there's been another light dusting to coat the trees and the streets.

Saturday (8th December) saw a riot of Santas descend on the ski resort of Verbier.

Some arrived on the Santa Express train laid on from Geneva while others came by car.

To participate in the Santa Summit, all skiers and snowboarders had to dress in obligatory red costumes to qualify for the CHF 5 lift pass set for the day.

That's less than £4 to ski in Verbier for the day - we say that's an opportunity not to be missed. 🎅🏻

... and they came in droves.

Some 3,015 folk to be precise.

All in all, the Santa Summit was a huge success.

Verbier proudly confirmed the number of St Nicks skiing and snowboarding on it's slopes was a record, as more and more folk join in every year (2017 - 2,656 Santas).

"Record Beat!"
"Snow falls and wind did not discourage the 3015St-Nicolas and fathers fathers who made an appointment this Saturday on the verbier ski area to celebrate the official opening of the 2018/2019. season they were 2656 Last year. Thank you and see you next year."

Even a white-out at Les Attelas didn't stop the keen Santas.

... the demons of Crampus!... the demons of Krampus!

And if you are wiondering about the Krampus character we encountered him a year ago in Ischgl:

Krampusnacht is a tradition that occurs across Austria, Bavaria, Croatia, South Tyrol, northern Italy and elsewhere in mainland Europe.

Krampus is a horned half-goat and half-demon figure who punishes children who have been naughty - as opposed to Saint Nicholas who rewards the good children with gifts.

The Krampus outfits and masks are created and worn by the youth of the villages and towns.

He carries chains and birch sticks to whip naughty children into shape.

He also carries a sack or a big bag to carry naughty children away.

He is said to be the son of the Norse goddess Hel, who rules the land of the dead.

So, now you know.

The man in red has already been out on the slopes in the USA.

Around 300 skiing and snowboarding Father Christmases took to the slopes of the Sunday River ski resort.

It was the 19th annual Santa Sunday event in the tiny town of Newry in the East Coast state of Maine.

And who says a well-propotioned man with a grey beard can't cut it in the park?

Seems he's crossed The Pond and been in the park in Kitzsteinhron in Austria:

This weekend he's heading to neighbouring Switzerland - Verbier to be precise.

In fact many thousands of Santas are:

The decorations are going up in ski resorts and we'll bring you a few pictures later.

But how about this for decorations in the snow with a musical accompanyment?

Our favourite one so far:

The UK tour operators all the stops are pulled out to ensure their guests have a fabulous festive period.

We have asked a few what they are up to and first out of the blocks and back in contact was VIP SKI.

Staff will be singing Xmas carols.

The nannies will be dressing as Santa's elves:

And if you like your Xmas markets we have written about them in this feature on the best ones in the Tirol in Austria.

And if you want to see more preparations across the mountains as Xmas gets ever closer then do check back.... It's beginning to feel alot like Xmas....
