RYDING FAILS TO FINISH IN ADELBODEN - Jane Peel, Chief Reporter
Sunday January 13, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

GB's leading alpine racer Dave Ryding could not complete the first run in the snow in Switzerland on Sunday. It's another win for Hirscher.

It was a disappointing morning for Dave Ryding in the sixth World Cup slalom of the season.

He would have been hoping to finish in the top 10 after just missing out with 11th place in Zagreb a week ago.

He started well in Adelboden in tricky, snowy conditions.

But he failed to recover from a mistake and was unable to complete the first run.

It's the first time he's failed to finish a race this season and he'll be hoping to be back on form next week in Wengen.

Ryding's 2018-19 results so far
  • Levi - 12th
  • Saalbach - 23rd
  • Madonna di Campiglio - 4th
  • Oslo (parallel slalom) - 2nd
  • Zagreb - 11th
  • Adelboden - DNF
Ryding was not the only top slalom racer to crash out in run one.

Other non-finishers were the Olympic slalom champion, Sweden's Andre Myhrer, Manuel Feller of Austria and Loic Meillard of Switzerland.

The British number two, Laurie Taylor, was going well until he, too, crashed out.

Going into the second run, Austria's Marco Schwarz led, with Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway second and Marcel Hirscher of Austria third.

But the brilliant Hirscher stormed to victory with his second run.

Clement Noel of France was second and Henrik Kristoffersen third.

First run leader Schwarz skied out on the second run.

Hirscher has now done the giant slalom and slalom double at Adelboden three times.

There was some good news for GB snowsport fans this weekend.

The team's newest member, Charlotte Bankes, picked up her second Europa Cup victory since changing allegiance from France to Britain.

The Snowboard Cross athlete topped the podium in Puy St Vincent in France on Saturday.

It follows a win in her first race for GB in a Europa Cup event in Pitztal, Austria, in November and a third place at the top level of the sport in a World Cup in Cervinia, Italy in December.
