Happy New Year from the Alps
Wednesday December 31, 2008 - Email this article to a friend

It's been a snowy New Year in many resorts with big celebrations and a few hangovers too. Check out the pictures and video.

Fireworks seem to be the order of the day in many resorts and nowhere more so than our base resort of Verbier in Switzerland.

There was no organised display by the resort, but rather a continual display round town that went on for hours on end.

The smart chalets overlooking the town seemed to be competing with each other to establish who could put on the best display so the rest of us took full advantage. Though the heavy snow meant we couldn't see them quite as well as in previous years.

Each time we gazed up from 10 o'clock through to the early hours the sky was ablaze with fireworks.

See the video below for some pictures of the Place Central at midnight as thousands crowded into the main square.  We'll be making a longer video over the next few days with the full story of the naked man up the lampost.

Snow falls in the Place CentralSnow falls in the Place CentralElsewhere people simply let them off from their balconies or shoved a rocket in a pile of snow, lit it and then watched it shoot up into the sky.

At midnight the main square was pretty hectic as champagne corks and fireworks competed for airspace.

We're not quite sure what the health and safety brigade would have made of it all, but everyone seemed to have fun.

Let's hope the people who set them off don't have the same fate in store as some men from Naples in Italy.

The women there have apparently instituted a sex ban for those men setting off illegal fireworks! Back in the Alps though the fireworks went up well and we assume everything else did too.

Over in Tignes in France 20,000 people turned out to dance the night away with the DJ, David Guetta.

It was snowing too for much of the evening just to make things even better.

There was an organised display on the Carry piste near the town where the mayor bid a Happy New Year to everyone and then the sky erupted as the fireworks lit up the night sky.

There was also a spectacular display over in Ischgl in Austria where people welcomes in the New Yera on the Silvretta piste as you can see from the picture below.

There was also a stunning laser light show.

Our reporter there tells us it was bitterly cold but still thousands of people turned out to celebrate.

Obviously the best fireworks were filmed by our cameraman in Verbier and we'll have a longer video up later, but we have taken a look at some videos from around the world and Sydney, Australia comes a pretty close 2nd.
