BAD KLEINKIRCHHEIM - Katie Bamber, Carinthia, Austria
Sunday March 10, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Bath-small-church-home. That's what this Austrian spa village's name translates to & it's exactly that. PlanetSKI is in town. NEW

It's Spring in Bad Kleinkirchheim.

Spring at its best.

And most importantly, spring skiing.

It's March and very sunny.

So why head here to ski this mouthful of a resort in Carinthia, Austria?

Fly to Klagenfurt - a new one to know because the transfer time is only 45 minutes to Bad Kleinkirchheim - 'BKK' from here on out.

BKK and Sankt Oswald are the ski areas in the Nockberger region.

BKK is very close to the Italian and Slovenian borders.

Venice is a 3-hour drive and Ljublijana is 1 hour 45.

The number plates parked up in the small village are from Poland, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Austria and mainly Italy.

'Respirare' is the Italian Slogan here.

Yes.

Breathe deep.

The fresh mountain air, and in places the alpine farm smell of goats, cows and pigs that provide the village with local cheese, yoghurt and milk.

Not only is the focus on well being and health.

It's a small, honest resort dedicated to being environmentally friendly.

The fish on the menus is from local rivers and lakes, the cheese is produced by the BKK dairy farmer.

The hotels are comfortable and so Austrian in homely feel, and are keen to keep things real.

It's all about the mountains, the lakes and the people who are lucky enough to be here.

BKK has thermal water.

And two large thermal spa centres.

It's spas not bars in BKK.

All about the hotels, in turn centred around relaxation and food.

Seriously good food.

Food that the Italians come for.

A cuisine with Italian, Austrian and Slovenian influence.

Why are you still reading not booking?

Hotel Trattlerhof is where to sleep, relax and eat, as there's not a huge amount out of the comfort of the (very comfortable) hotel.

The ski and spa resort of BKK is home to Olympic downhill champion and skiing legend Franz Klammer.

It offers ideal terrain for intermediates.

Saying that, it also hosts the FIS women's World Cup downhill, so there's steep and long too.

So aside from the sunny skiing - the weather comes from Italy - the non-ski activities are just as good.

It's why it's a fantastic resort for couples or low-key groups and families wanting wonderful hospitality, comfort, skiing and sun.

The village sits at 1,000m.

The skiing goes to 2,000m.

The Tirolean mountains steal the snow and extreme weather.

Instead BKK gets the Italian sun.

Who's complaining?

Here is for the sight-seeing skiers, winter holidayers who like to relax a little, ski more.

The terrain is good (that I've skied so far) and you have another resort on the same pass.

One ski day in and one very good, very Austrian spa afternoon down (do you know how Austrians sauna?.

I'm as relaxed as can be.

The entertainment couldn't be more traditional; Isn't that why we come here to this gorgeous ski country?
