FATMAP X: 3D ROUTE PLANNING
Tuesday April 16, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Mountain Tracks has become the first tour operator to integrate FATMAP's innovative 3D mapping technology in its trip guides.

It's the start of showing how backcountry mapping technology can be used by professional mountain guides to explore and plan adventures.

Mountain Tracks is using the 3D mapping technology for route planning in its alpine adventures.

The detailed maps show mountaineers, skiers and trekkers the exact routes.

Mountain Tracks trips are plotted by IFMGA qualified guides.

This technology allows guides and users to explore terrain in incredible detail.

With this level of detail, Mountain Tracks can plan equipment in advance.

Not only equipment, but adventurers can work on fitness and nutrition choices in advance, with plenty of information.

The first three plotted FATMAP routes follow Mountain Tracks most popular trips.
  • Trekking the Classic Haute Route
  • Climbing Mont Blanc
  • Ski Touring the Bernese Oberland Traverse

Eventually, all Mountain Tracks trips will display integrated FATMAP routes on the booking pages.

"It's exciting to be able to fully visualise the routes our guides will be taking using FATMAP technology," Mountain Tracks Product & Sales Manager Dan Thornton says.

"...and on an organisational level it helps us to explain to the customer what to expect on the trip."

"We've been using FATMAP for a while now but the new EXPLORE features really take it to the next level of detail," Thornton continues.

"...custom layers & snow depth [mean] we can assess the terrain ahead of time."
