USA HAS 4TH BEST SEASON EVER - Katie Bamber, Senior News Reporter
Wednesday May 1, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The snow this season in the USA contributes to the ski country recording its 4th best with 59 million ski & snowboarder visits.

U.S. ski resorts topped 59 million skier and snowboarder visits this winter.

It marks an 11% growth from last year, which was a reasonably poor season for snow.

Snowfall was up 31% nationwide from last season.

The incredible snowfall in the West of the country during Winter 18/19 no doubt was a factor in boosting ski area visits.

Since the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) began recording visitation in 1978-79, this winter comes in at 4th best.

In the Rockies, lift pass sales were up 15.6%

The Rockies include resorts such as Aspen, Vail, Copper Mountain, Winter Park, Steamboat & Breckenridge, in Colorado.

Deer Valley, Snowbird in Utah - Jackson Hole in Wyoming.

The Sierras had even more, meaning resorts such as Mammoth Mountain and Squaw Valley had banner seasons.

This season the Sierra Nevada Mountain Resorts saw a near to 23% rise in lift pass sales.

Snow and resort reports from this season:
"Total visitation numbers were highest in the Rocky Mountain region at over 24 million," the NSSA trade group statement read.

"...a record year for the region."

"[It was] followed by the Northeast with approximately 12.7 million," the release states.

"Snow is our greatest asset and this year was one to remember," NSAA President and CEO Kelly Pawlak said in a statement.

"Skiers and riders were greeted with an awesome on-snow experience."

The record for skier visits in U.S ski resorts was in 2011, with 60.54 million.

The only other season that topped 60 million visits was the 2007-08 season.

And for the same price as a week's lift ticket in a mainstream ski resort in North America.

But you have to buy before the season kicks off.

The U.S. ski industry has struggled to grow over the past 40 years, with numbers staying largely flat from decade to decade, The Aspen Times has reported.

The NSAA said it will be important to build on this year's momentum by engaging new skiers and snowboarders.
