NZ RESORTS PREPARE FOR WINTER
Saturday May 11, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

With the ski season in the northern hemisphere all but over our thoughts at PlanetSKI are turning south.

There are a range of developments and we will be reporting on them over the coming weeks.

See here for a wider PlanetSKI feature on where you can ski in the summer months - both here in Europe and in the southern hemisphere.

First up it's two of the resorts near Queenstown in the south island of New Zealand.

Coronet Peak has a new high-speed, 6-seater chairlift.

"It's going to give us a smoother ride, a faster ride, and a more comfortable ride," says ski area manager Nigel Kerr.

The lift is part of a $35m programme by NZSki across its two Queenstown ski fields.

The company was also planning to install a new chairlift at The Remarkables.

However opposition by environmental campaigners delayed the process.

Approval for the new $16 million lift was only received in recent weeks - too late for this winter's skiers.

60 containers' worth of equipment will now have to sit in storage.

"We'll get straight onto it in November this year, and have it built for the 2020 winter season," said the ski area manager for The Remarkables, Ross Lawrence.

So, what it skiing like in New Zealand?

PlanetSKI visited last year:

Our editor, James Cove skied most of the resorts on his 2018 road trip Down Under.

And if you go to NZ, it would be rude to explore the country outside the ski fields....

And this is a great way to get around....
