Monday June 10, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The joint 2026 bid from Stockholm & Are has reiterated its pledge to deliver the first climate-positive Winter Olympic Games.

It claims to have a sustainability programme driven by Sweden's global leadership in environmental protection and green innovation.

Sweden has ambitious climate targets.

It aims to cut emissions by 70% by 2030 and reach full climate neutrality by 2045.

It is claimed that national culture of sustainability was in evidence in Are last winters when it hosted the first fossil fuel-free International Ski Federation Alpine World Ski Championships.

One initiative is all flights the would-be Organising Committee charters between Games venues in Stockholm, Åre and Latvia's capital Riga will be double compensated at gold standard level for greenhouse

gas emissions.

It also claims any unavoidable carbon dioxide emissions will be offset by a minimum of 115%.

It is up against a joint Italian bid from Milan and Cortina that appears at this stage to be the firm favourite.

the Stockholm Are 2026 chief executive, Richard Brisius.

"Climate change is our planet's most important challenge, so 'neutrality' is not enough: Stockholm Are 2026 is committed to climate-positive Games. "
