WAITING FOR WINTER - James Cove, PlanetSKI Editor
Saturday June 15, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Skiing is underway in New Zealand as resorts open, but more snow is needed in places. Australia is off to a cracking start. NEW

The resort of Coronet Peak on the South Island opened at the weekend at the start of its ski season.

The only trouble was there wasn't enough snow for skiing and snowboarding.

In recent days the resort has been making snow and, despite only 12cm of natural snow, 4 out of 8 lifts are now running with some limited skiing possible.

"We've been making snow for the past 3 days and our grooming crew have done an exceptional job on the M1. Please ski cautiously and be aware of unmarked hazards in our early season conditions," said the resort on Wednesday.

"We are open, a beautiful day high above the valley cloud," said the resort last weekend as it opened for the season.

"Pop up for Sightseeing, Sledding and Snowplay. Take a ride on our brand new 6 seater Coronet Express, grab a coffee and check us out."

On social media some questioned the point as they couldn't ski.

"Why open at all ?? Sight seeing a waste of time," said Mark White on the resort's Facebook page.

200 hundred people did turn out on the Opening Day.

Elsewhere in New Zealand things are better - just.

The Remarkables:

"Cold, calm and clear conditions - ideal for snowmaking. We have opened the Shadow chairlift open for the first time this season. All off piste terrain have unmarked hazards with variable conditions," said the resort.

6 out of 6 lifts are open.

The off piste is described as "firm".

It's been a great day on the mountain today with fine weather lasting throughout. Tomorrow it's predicted to be mainly fine with some high cloud," said the resort on Wednesday.

5 out of 5 lifts are open.

We will bring you news on some of the other NZ ski areas later, so do check back.

So, what is Coronet Peak, and the other local NZ ski resorts like?

At the moment it's all a far cry from the snowfalls in Australia where the resorts are having a record-breaking start to winter as we have reported:

But the cannons are going in New Zealand and the temperatures are set to fall, so fingers crossed proceedings will get underway properly soon.

We'll let you know when things do...
