OUT OF COURT SETTLEMENT IN ABUSE SKI COACH CASE
Friday July 5, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

A coach for the Alpine Canada junior squad, Bertrand Charest, has been found guilty on 37 charges.

They include sexual assault and sexual exploitation of nine former athletes aged between 12 and 18 years old.

Alpine Canada has now reached an out-of-court settlement with three former athletes who were abused.

It has also apologised to the victims for its failure to protect them.

In a statement, Alpine Canada admitted it had "put itself first, not the victims" instead of providing support when the abuse by Bertrand Charest was discovered.

Gail Kelly, Anna Prchal and Geneviève Simard launched legal action against the national governing body in December.

They claimed Alpine Canada had been aware of the abuse but had done little to protect them.

Kelly, Prchal and Simard, who were among those abused by Charest, were seeking £183,000 each in compensatory damages and £91,000 according to Canadian press.

Alpine Canada confirmed in a statement that it had reached an undisclosed settlement with the three former athletes and both sides were satisfied.

Charest was sentenced to 12-years in jail in 2017 but has been released pending the outcome of an appeal in his case.

Last June another former Canadian skier launched a proposed class action lawsuit alleging Alpine Canada didn't protect its female athletes from Charest.

Allison Forsyth alleged in the British Columbia Supreme Court that Alpine Canada failed to property investigate the coaching history of Charest and is liable for his sexual misconduct.
