There’s still powder to be found

A fresh fall on New Year’s Eve helped top up conditions nicely. Check out the video of the powder on New Year's Day.

The heavy and consistent snow fall of early season has given way to hard packed and crowded pistes in many resorts over the holiday period.

We sadly have tales of people dieing in collisions on the slopes and our round up of the snow conditions across the mountains paints a varied picture.  However in places it is still perfect.

Here’s a video of blue sky and powder from our base resort of Verbier.

Many resorts though have seen the snow tracked out and high winds have packed down the snow.  Our reporter in the French resort of Alpe d’Huez says conditions have not been that good lately and there have been very strong winds.

Meanwhile Henry's Avalanche Talk over in the Espace Killy in France also confirms high winds have affected the snow.

"There's good snow but you need to use intelligence and analysis to work out where it is.  At the moment the best snow is on north and especially northwest slopes.  The southerly winds over the past week have blown snow off the south slopes and created a hard wind crust.  Further to that the snow has been blown onto north west facing sheltered slopes.  Needless to say this is where the greatest risk is from avalanche," he tells us.

With the high numbers of people skiing at the moment some resorts do need a top up.

Or perhaps we are just getting greedy and used to regular dumps of powder..

Some people are still finding fresh snow.  The pictures below are from Les Contamines in France sent in by Callum and Debbie Edge.

Callum is widely known as the laughing butcher but we’ll have no puns here about his carving, how he needs to beef up his skiing, stop being a chicken or how he minces though the snow.
