BRITISH SKI INSTRUCTOR JAILED FOR 10 YEARS
Saturday August 17, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

Matthew Williams brutally raped a woman last season in Australia and assaulted a man beating him unconscious. UPDATED

The attack happened in Jindabyne near the ski resort of Perisher in New South Wales in July 2018.

Williams came up to the 25-year old man and 22-year old woman after leaving a pub, the Banjo Paterson Inn.

He followed them for 1km before approaching them.

He punched the man in the face and then kicked him unconscious when he had fallen to the ground.

He then raped the woman before fleeing the scene when a passing car stopped.

Police first thought more than one person was involved due to the severity of the injuries.

His watch was found at the scene and he first said it had been stolen.

Justice Nicole Noman described his attack as cowardly, sustained and particularly violent.

"It must have been horrifying in its intensity and severity," she said.

Williams presented a letter to the court, in which he apologised to both his victims.

"The pain you may have been experiencing is nothing on the pain you inflicted on me. That pain will stick with me forever," said the female victim.

Last April Williams pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated sexual assault, inflicting actual bodily harm with intent to have sexual intercourse with another, and possessing a prohibited drug.

The area has a known drugs issue.

He had worked at Perisher as a ski instructor since 2014.

"We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic attack in Jindabyne. We are cooperating fully with police in their investigation," said a statement from the resort to local media after the incident.

The resort removed his biography after the incident but had described him as a "highly experienced and knowledgeable" teacher.

"Matt is one of the most versatile members on the team and has proved himself time and time again coaching ski-cross and alpine racing," the biography read.
