GB ALPINE CHAMPS RETURN TO TIGNES
Thursday September 12, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

The British national ski racing championships will be in the French ski area for at least the next three years.

The high-altitude resort has signed up to host the event through to 2022.

Next year's Senior Championships will run from Sunday 29th March to Sunday 5th April.

The Children's Championships follow from Monday 6th to Friday 10th April.

It will be the sixth consecutive year that the Championships have been held on the Stade in the Val Claret area of Tignes.

More than 500 competitors will take to the slopes including those competing in the GB Para Alpine Championships on the second weekend.

It makes it the most significant event on the GB Snowsport calendar with many of Britain's racing stars attending.

"There's no other event in British skiing or snowboarding where such a high percentage of our best athletes battle it out head-to-head which makes the GB Alpine Championships a very special couple of weeks," said Paul Tayner, GB Alpine Director.

"It's rare in any sport for the nation's best up-and-coming talent to get the opportunity to compete against their idols, and on many occasions our Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

"The GB Alpine Championships provides that opportunity and, as we did this year, we often have Olympic and World Championship medallists from other nations entering the event which only serves to increase the stature of the competition."

GB's double World Cup medallist Dave Ryding is usually a regular at the event and holds the record for the most British slalom titles.

He has won it nine times, but he chose not to compete last year for the first time as it didn't fit his schedule.

The event has been held at different resorts in different countries over the decades it's been held but it now seems to have settled in Tignes.

"Tignes continues to invest in its infrastructure and racing facilities every year and we work closely with them to keep improving the event each time we return," said Trayner.

"It's fantastic to work with such passionate hosts and we're looking forward to delivering our best event ever next year and keep improving over the term of the new agreement through to 2022."
