WHICH RESORTS IN FRANCE HAD THE MOST SNOW LAST SEASON?
Thursday November 7, 2019 - Email this article to a friend

You may be surprised which resorts come out on top and the resort with the third most snowfall isn't even in the Alps.

Snow levels often produce debate and not everyone agrees with the findings of this survey from Sportihome (more of that later) but here they are.

In No1 place it's Les Contamines that received a whopping 5.43m.

You may have heard of it but it is not exactly a household name.

Next up is Val Thorens that received 4.96m.

Here is what it looks like now as it has just had some fresh snow.

It opens for the 2019/20 season in a couple of weeks and PlanetSKI will be there.

As we are most years.

Our chief reporter, Jane Peel, was there in 2018:

And in third spot is a resort you are unlikely to have heard of - Ax3Domaines.

It had 4.93m of snow last winter.

It is no secret to us at PlanetSKI and we have skied there many times.

One of our reporters, Iain Martin, was there last season.

Iain runs Skipedia and he was the one that alerted us to the Top 10 - see here for his blog post.

And another of our reporters, Ian Anderson, was there last spring as the season drew to a close.

"Ax3Domaines really is one of those hidden gems with fabulous slopes and tons of snow," said the PlanetSKI editor, James Cove.

"I have skied there many times and we are thinking on making it a winter base in the coming years and living there for a few months."

"To ski the resort and visit the other fabulous resorts in the French Pyrenees."

And what about the others in the Top Ten fro Sportihome we hear you ask?

Now we don't want to spoil the fun, but not everyone agrees with the results of the survey.

Our resident snow expert, Fraser Wilkin from weathertoski, is not so sure of the findings.

"The Val Thorens figure would be for resort level and the Les Contamines figure is 100% taken towards the upper end of their ski area. If we had figures for upper parts of the Tartentaise ski areas (which are scarce) they would be higher than the Les Contamines one for sure," said Fraser.

"Separately, for the first time in years, I didn't manage to get a figure for Avoriaz but I can guarantee that it would be number one in France at resort level, probably around 7m, perhaps more."
