Sharp increase in some lift pass prices
Monday November 10, 2008 - Email this article to a friend

The cost of a lift ticket is going up and the low level of sterling doesn't help either.

The biggest increase has been in Andorra where a 6-day pass to the Grandvalira area has gone up to 210 euros (£168.63) making it one of the most expensive in Europe.

Lift tickets in Andorra used to be some of the cheapest before the system was overhauled and the resorts went upmarket.

Further west in the Pryrenees the Spanish resort of Baqueira-Beret is charging 222 euros (£178.27), making it the most expensive.

lift_2_400Italy’s Dolomiti Superski pass will cost 220 euros (£176.66)  for an adult in high season, an increase of 5%.

Meanwhile across the Atlantic Deer Valley says its lift ticket for the Xmas holidays will be over $600 (£340.64).  It’s thought to be the first time a lift ticket has topped the $600 mark.  A single day during this period will cost you $86 (£48.83).

The lift pass has always been expensive in the US and has traditionally made up a greater percentage of the cost of a ski holiday, but it appears the cost in Europe is now going up too.

lift_1One Zermatt regular and reader of planetSKI, Liz Vizard, says the cost is getting ludicrous.  “Of course Zermatt is a great ski area and the resort has spent a fortune upgrading the lifts in recent years but it’s just too expensive now”.

To see exactly where the money on your lift ticket goes we spent a day out with the pisteurs and saw behind the scenes of the Zermatt lift company.  We’ll bring you that report later in the season month.  It may help you understand why a lift ticket costs so much.
