Ski signs stolen
Tuesday July 24, 2012 - Email this article to a friend

There has been a series of thefts in the US resort of Telluride. A dozen marker posts have vanished at a cost of $3,500. It is not as bad as a resort in the Czech Republic where a whole ski lift was taken earlier this year.

It is thought the slope signs were taken in June though the thefts were not noticed until July as the resort is closed.

Maintenance crews noticed they were missing and contacted the authorities.

Police say more than one person would have been involved and a vehicle would have been needed to take them away.

There appears to be no motive for the thefts as the signs have little re-sale value or alternative use.

The signs gone include Dynamo, Electra, Joint Point and Gold Hill.

"At this point we do not have any leads as to who may have done it, and we are interviewing people," said the San Miguel County Undersheriff, Sky Walters.

Thefts of ski resort infrastructure are rare, but they do happen.

In the most unusual one we know of at PlanetSKI a whole ski lift was stolen from the Czech Republic resort of Desna as we reported earlier in the year.

It is thought that it was taken for its scrap value as in the Czech Republic railings, fountains and even complete metal railway bridges have been taken.

See here for how it is possible to steal a railway bridge!

Meanwhile the sign in the Austrian town of Fucking has been the target of thieves on several occasions though the village sign is now sunk into concrete and is virtually impossible to remove.

We mentioned the thefts in this PlanetSKI story.

In Telluride a reward of $500 is being offered to catch the culprits.
