The US trade group SnowSports Industries America (SIA) has published its 2012 SIA Snow Sports Participation Report. It is a wide-ranging report looking at many aspects of the industry. Including how many people ski.

It gives information about trends, demographic profiles, and major differences between core and casual participants.

It says 6.9% of the total U.S. population that is over six-years-old participates in at least one snowsport activity. That is just under 20m.

The report covers alpine skiing, snowboarding, telemarking,  cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

38,500 American households were surveyed about their sports and leisure activities.

The report also details how the poor snow of last winter cut the number of people skiing and snowboarding.

It fell from 21m the previous season to 19.8m.

8.8m people said they considered themselves to be skiers or snowboarders, but had not participated in the last two seasons. The most common reason was money.

Alpine skiers fell 11% to 10.2 million, snowboarding declined 8% to 7.6 million and cross-country skiing went down 5% to 4.3 million participants.

44% of snowsports enthusiasts do alpine skiing with snowboarders making up 31% of the total and the other 25% are telemarkers, cross country skiers and those in the park and pipe.

Now if you like your statistics here are a few more from the report: Last winter the skiers, snowboarders and snow-shoe walkers burned off 332,386,750 calories while on the snow, that's to burn off about 475,000 cheeseburgers, 2.2 million beers, 45,211 servings of chips or 1.1 million slices of pepperoni pizza.
