More snow to hit the Alps
Thursday November 27, 2008 - Email this article to a friend

As if the season hasn't got off to a good enough start there's a new snow storm is on its way. This time hitting the southern Alps. More resorts are opening this weekend too.

Many resorts across the Alps are already enjoying nearly twice as much snow as they would normally expect to get at this time of year.

This weekend a new storm is due to hit the Alps from the south which should bring snow to the higher resorts in the Southern Alps.

It's not just the high resorts of Zermatt, Saas Fee, Tignes, Obergurgl, Val Thorens, Cervinia and others that are getting the early snow, even lowly Les Gets in France at 1172m is planning to open this weekend.

chairliftIt's very rare for a French resort to bring its opening date forward but Les Gets is doing just that.

"The season has come early here with good snow conditions and top quality skiing so we are opening the Chavannes slopes for the weekend", says Chrystelle Felisaz from the resort's Tourist office.

We'll bring you a report from a planetSKi reader who is going out to Les Gets this weekend.

Les Houches in Chamonix is also set to open along with Val d'Isere and Les Deux Alpes.

Meanwhile, Ischgl in Austria is opening too with a concert by Leona Lewis.  You can read more about it here. Other Austrian resorts open include those in Ski Welt and some in the Arlberg.

As you may already have read and seen a team from PlanetSKI was in Verbier last weekend reporting on the conditions and filming a short video of skiers and snowboarders making their first turns of the seson.

So, if you want to see what it's like take a look at the video below.

The new snow storm could bring up to 50cm of new snow though the temperature is expected to rise a bit so it may be rain low down and snow at altitude.

max_snowball_400It's a similar story over in the Pyrenees with all the resorts in Andorra open for business.  Arcalis is a particular favourite of ours here at planetSKI and it has well over a metre of snow on the upper slopes.  There should be a little bit of fresh snow (5cm) over the weekend.

As well as a full account of the opening in Ischgl from our reporter there for the Leona Lewis concert we'll bring you up to date reports from around the Alps this weekend.

In the meantime check out some of the fantastic pictures in our photo gallery that have been taken this week across the Alps from our team of photographers.

Here at planetSKI we come direct from the Alps!

For the spirit of the mountains.
