Sochi reveals profit of £85m

The host city of the 2014 Winter Games has said it made an operating profit. Figures have just been released but they do not take into account the full cost of building works.

Sochi was the most expensive Olympics ever.

A figure of $50b was generally put on cost of The Games but this does not explain the context.

Much had to be built from scratch and it will remain in place for many, many years to come.

The Winter Games is just the start of efforts to introduce mass ski tourism into the area as we have reported in the past on PlanetSKI.

"The estimated operating profit which the Organising Committee received is in the region of 5 billion rubles (£85 million) and will go towards the development of mass sport in our country," said the President and chief executive of Sochi 2014, Dmitry Chernyshenko.

"We may be proud for what we've achieved. The Games were commercially successful," he added.

The London 2012 Games had a surplus of £30m and the last Winter Games at Vancouver in Canada broke even.
