New ski area for Scotland
Wednesday October 22, 2014 - Email this article to a friend

The Lowther Hills Ski Club in Scotland is seeking planning permission to build a club house and rope tow lift in Dumfries & Galloway. It will be the first new ski area in the UK for decades.

It will take the number of ski areas in Scotland to six and is the first in the southern part of the country.

It will be situated near Wanlockhead and hopes to attract locals and people from the north of England.

There are 3m people within one hour of the area and this week it is expected that final planning permission will be agreed shortly.

"Skiing is a passion for me and many people in this part of the country and it look slike our dreams are about to come true," said the man behind the new area, Anjo Abelaira, to PlanetSKI.

We have reported on the development in the past on PlanetSKI; see here for further details.

It will be staffed by volunteers and be mainly at weekend to members only.

There will be a clubhouse, a 600 metre-long ski tow for intermediate skiers, and a beginners' area with two 100 metre-long ski tows.

The main tow lift comes from the Harwood Ski Club in the Pennines, and volunteers have been hard at work over parts of the summer to make move it.

It has a target membership of 400 for its first season and will expand membership in the coming years.

In recent years Scotland has seen an improvement in the amount of snow it has received, though it has come with its problems, as we have reported here.

Lowther Hill was a busy ski resort in the 1960s and 1970s when there was a permanent ski tow on the slope.

The local council meets this month and it is expected final permissions will be given and the area will open in December,
