Snowboarding in decline
Thursday January 29, 2015 - Email this article to a friend

Figures just released in the USA show a significant fall over the past decade. Reports of its death though are somewhat premature.

According to the National Sporting Goods Association participation in the sport has dropped by 28% from 2003 to 2013.

Skiing has also declined but by less so and is down by 10%.

It is therefore partly due to a lessening interest among snowsports enthusiasts, but also due to a general decline.

This decline has been caused by unfavourable economic conditions and the increased prices in resorts.

Snowboarding is primarily, but not exclusively, a young persons activity.

Snowboarding sprung up in the late 1970s and exploded in the 1990s.

It has though been on general decline in the USA and that trend is reflected in Europe.

In the USA snowboard sales dropped 25% since a peak in 2008-2009.

Ski sales rose 1.5% according to information from Snow Sports Industries of America.

Skis have changed dramtically and have been strongly influenced by snowboards.

Terrain parks are now as likely to be full of people on fat, twin-tip skis as on snowboards.

The divide between snowboarders and skiers is reducing, but not completely.

Here on PlanetSKI we posted one piece from Michael Cranmer questioning the snowboarding fraternity and one piece from our snowboard reporter, James Timothy, who took a different stance.

What is your position?

Despite the general decline in snowboarding there is no chance of it disappearing altogether and it remains popular.

Some say the children of the early snowboarders are now getting older and taking up the sport.

For the spirit of the mountains
